Cocktail heißt wörtlich übersetzt „Hahnenschwanz“. Über die Entstehung des englischen Ausdrucks ranken sich eine Vielzahl von Erzählungen.

Die Hahnenkampfstory

Eine Urban legend besagt dass der Cocktail seinen Namen den Hahnenkämpfen zu verdanken hat. Der Sieger hatte das Recht, dem getöteten Hahn die bunten Schwanzfedern auszureißen. Beim Siegerumtrunk wurden diese Federn als Trophäe mit einem Drink –„on the Cock´s tail“ geehrt und so kam es zur späteren Abkürzung Cocktail.

Hahnenschwanzfedern

Eine etwas schlichtere Version besagt einfach, dass es ein einfaches Mischgetränk gab, welches mit Hahnenschwanzfedern garniert wurde.

Die Layer-Story

Eine weitere urban Legend befasst sich mit dem Schichten von unterschiedlich Dichten und farbigen Likören. Die unterschiedlichen Dichten hängen von der Zucker- und Alkoholkonzentration ab. Sie bewirken bei vorsichtigem Einfüllen stabile Schichten mit unterschiedlichen Farben. Diese Schichten ähneln einem bunten Hahnenschwanz. Ein Weitverbreiter Cocktail bzw. Shot ist zum Beispiel der B52.

Die Coquetier-Story

Auf Wiki habe ich folgende Geschichte gefunden:

„Möglicherweise schuf auch der Franzose Antoine Peychaud den ersten Cocktail – einen Mix aus Whiskey und Absinth, der als Sazerac bezeichnet wird. Peychaud testete verschiedene Mixgetränke in New Orleans und servierte diese angeblich in Eierbechern, die auf Französisch coquetier heißen, woraus in der amerikanischen Verballhornung dann Cocktail geworden sein soll.“ Quelle www.wikipedia.de

Die Bekannteste-Story

Die bekannteste Geschichte von der Entstehung des Cocktails, spricht von einer US-amerikanischen Bar. In dieser Bar gab es wohl einen großen hohlen Hahn. Der Barkeeper schüttete, zum Ende des Tages, alle übrig gebliebenen Getränke in diesen Hahn. Das hochprozentige Gemisch bot er zum Sonderpreis an. Als dies sich herumgesprochen hatte kam es in Mode ein Getränk aus einem Cocktail anzubieten.
